Friday 16^th July sees Sustainable Wales host a community festival of Porthcawl pop (and more!) at the Seabank Hotel. Following last year’s success, The Commune returns with another exhilarating and eclectic line-up of quality acts and performances – a mini-festival with a Glastonbury vibe!

The main aim of this charity fundraiser is to provide a live showcase for original material from local talent and the mix of acts and styles is really diverse: the night will be a journey of sounds and styles including quirky acoustics from Porthcawl Ukulele Band, raucous indie rockers dEkE, our very own ‘modfather’ Nick Ward and his band, some hip-hop street vibes from Blud Kunnektion and rounded off with an electro-funk dance set from WMD. A few special guests are coming too!

Under the Arts for the Earth banner, raising awareness of local and global issues, the ‘Art & Mind’ sessions include poet Kris Evans with soundscapes and psychedelic projections, and there will be a ‘Bongo Fury’ drumming circle for everyone to join in led by djembe drummers Weapons of Mass Percussion. There’ll also be festival stalls selling jewellry, bags, arts & crafts including ethical gifts from SUSSED..

BridgendCounty is applying for fairtrade status and we hope to be successful in the near future. The market will feature a mix of craft and food stalls, an ethical café for shoppers to stop and enjoy a cuppa and a piece of Christmas cake, and fun and traditional activities for all ages.

If you’ve been good throughout the year, our “Green” Father Christmas will be stopping by to find out what boys and girls really want under their trees this Christmas!

Sustainable Wales & friends hold a community climate change awareness event in Sandy Bowl as part of a global day of action co-ordinated by www.350.org where thousands of people around the world come together and mark the number 350 parts per million - which science says is the level of CO2 in the atmosphere that we need to get back to to prevent dangerous climate change. The events are a way for the public to make their voices heard in advance of the Copenhagen Climate Change talks in December.

The Porthcawl event is a 350 minute ‘drumathon’!

Drumming starts at 11.10 am and finishes at 5.00pm. 350 minutes (that’s 5 hours and 50 minutes to be exact!) of people-powered drumming fun with samba, dance. junk drums will be there for the kids to bang too!

Climate activists, global citizens, drummers and dancers are invited to join in throughout the afternoon.

where to find the fun:
follow the sound of the rhythms to the zero-carbon gazebo village in Sandy Bowl nestled between Coney Beach funfair/Hi-Tide car park and Trecco Bay caravan park See MAP link above.

The location is perfect as the Sandy Bowl Drumathon is being held in a grassy arena in the heart of a disused caravan park right on the beach at Sandy Bay near Porthcawl harbour and funfair - so it is a bit of a celebration of local regeneration too!

For the climate sinners who have to drive (unfortunately Porthcawl has no train station!!) there is ample parking at the Hi-Tide car park at the end of Mackworth Road, off New Road.

There are regular buses from Cardiff and Swansea.

The group believes the ability to make laws in Wales will help “meet the challenge of dealing with economic mismanagement and climate change”.

But it warns that “radical change” is needed in the way Wales is governed, stating: “Thus far devolution has consolidated existing networks of influence in Wales and has not extended beyond the usual suspects.”

The evidence presented to Sir Emyr Jones Parry, chairman of the All-Wales Convention, claims: “Frankly, we are in dire need of fresh blood and modern ideas in politics, community work and local decision-making.”

The former UN ambassador will publish a report by the end of the year on attitudes to further powers for the Assembly. His conclusions are expected to be a major influence on whether or not the Labour-Plaid Government decides to hold a referendum on law-making powers.

Margaret Minhinnick, director of Sustainable Wales, said: “The submission argues that new powers will only be effective if the whole of the Welsh nation – our voluntary bodies, our community councils, indeed the whole electorate, share in their use. The report argues that insufficient attention has been paid by those that govern to the processes of active informed civil engagement in decision- making.”

Llais Cymru argues there is “growing dissatisfaction” with the way consultations are run, claiming “participation has little impact and is often used as a tool to legitimise decisions already taken.”

Ms Minhinnick said: “Modern politics is a ritualised spectator sport. Society allows politicians to manage the day-to-day affairs of our nation while complaining vociferously about the poor job they make of the task.”

Llais Cymru believes the situation can be improved through a combination of new powers and greater public participation.

James Maiden, the author of the report presented to the Convention, said: “Politicians will have to commit themselves to facilitating genuine citizen engagement. At the same time, citizens must accept the responsibilities that come with power share.”

He was confident Wales would “rise to this challenge”.

Practical measures proposed include the creation of a Civil Society Forum which would allow local groups to build strong links with the Assembly and exchange information.

Consultations, the group argues, should be run according to a legally binding code of practice.

The submission concludes: “The stage is set in Wales for an inclusive style of politics and there is evidence that citizens are willing and able to take on more decision- making responsibility. Those with the decision-making power must take the necessary steps to enable and support more effective participation.”

The Parliament for Wales Campaign has existed for nearly half-a-century. It lobbied for a body with tax-varying powers and the ability to pass primary legislation.

It states: “Although the Assembly has clearly achieved some very important things for Wales it has, however, failed to achieve an acceptable level of credibility in the eyes of a still substantial proportion of the population.”

Charity, ‘Sustainable Wales’ is organising a Question Time for candidates standing in the JUNE 4 European Parliamentary elections.

The event will be held at The RAFA Club, 6 - 8, New Road, Porthcawl, at 8pm on MONDAY, JUNE 1, ‘09. 

Euro candidates from the Labour, Plaid Cymru, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Green parties will be put on the spot and asked to explain why the public should vote for them.

Margaret Minhinnick, Director of Sustainable Wales, said today:

“These are very difficult times. Our economy has been traumatised by the banking crisis, and we have an enormous debt to pay off.

“Climate change is a fact of life, and society has to start discussing life after oil.

“All our politicians are struggling to keep abreast of events. Putting them on the spot in an old fashioned political hustings is important for democracy and accountability.

“The public is invited to come along and ensure we have a lively night of local politics in a true hustings atmosphere!”

Each candidate will have two minutes to convince the audience why they should be supported. The rest of the evening will be devoted to questions and answers.

It is thought matters as diverse as the difficulties of local businesses, the proposed Scarweather wind farm, a possible Severn Barrage will be aired.
